There’s nothing wrong with removing unwanted body hair the old-fashioned way – also known as shaving – but it’s a time-consuming method. If you want to avoid having to shave every few days, there are plenty of longer term and even permanent options for unwanted body hair removal.
Waxing is a relatively simple procedure. While home waxing kits are available, it’s probably best to get started in a salon. The technician applies heated wax to the area of the unwanted hair, applies a cloth on top and then rips the hairs out by the root. Yes, it hurts a little, but your hair is gone for up to a month, and your skin is silky smooth.
Laser hair removal isn’t cheap, but the effects are semi-permanent. Once you’ve finished all of your laser hair removal sessions, which consist of six to eight treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, you’ll only need an annual touch-up to remain hair-free. If your body hair is red, gray or blond, laser hair removal is not an option. Dark-skinned people can undergo laser hair removal, but make sure the facility has the proper lasers and experience with treating a dark-skinned clientele. With darker skin, there’s a risk of pigmentation changes from the laser, so permanent light blotches appear.
Before undergoing laser hair removal, avoid tanning and do not use any hair removal methods other than shaving prior to a session.
Electrolysis is truly permanent laser hair removal. Warning: The process can hurt, but the results are worth a little discomfort. It works on any skin or hair type. The number of sessions you’ll need depends on the size of the area you’re having treated. The technician uses a very fine needle that sends an electrical current right into the hair follicle, which destroys it.
If you want to eradicate facial hair, you have a couple of additional choices. With threading, the technician uses a small piece of thread to life the hair out by the root. It’s a fast and inexpensive process, with the results lasting up to a month. A more expensive approach is dermaplaning, in which the technician uses a surgical scalpel to shave off dead skin cells, along with unwanted facial hair. Although this is a good method to keep rid of unwanted facial hair, it’s really more of a skincare solution, since dermaplaning gets rid of all those dead skin cells that can clog pores and cause complexion problems.
