It’s summer, the time of year when the right hair removal method is absolutely critical. Otherwise, you could end up with stubble when you’re exposing more skin than ever before, and that ruins your entire look.

Shaving

Shaving is far from the ideal summer hair removal option, as the hair grows back within a few days, but it’s cheap and easy. For best results, shave after taking a warm shower, and apply a rich shaving cream to your legs or underarms. Shave in the direction of the hair growth, which lessens the possibility of ingrown hairs. After shaving, apply lotion to the area to keep it smooth.

Waxing

The waxing experience is not exactly a day at the beach, but if that’s where you’re headed for a couple of weeks, grin and bear it and enjoy silky, hair-free skin during your vacation. Don’t bother exfoliating or shaving for several days prior to your waxing appointment, but do keep your skin moisturized. Once the waxing session is over, avoid touching the waxed areas, since that can transfer bacteria to your skin. Also stay out of the sun for a few days and avoid hot showers – or hot yoga.

Sugaring

Sugaring isn’t cheap, but it is natural and doesn’t hurt nearly as much as waxing, although it’s not painless. For at least a couple of weeks before your appointment, avoid putting any glycolic acids, retinols or similar products on the area you plan to have sugared. The good news is that you don’t really have to do anything after sugaring, as it helps moisturize your skin. Of course, adding a little extra moisturizer doesn’t hurt.

Long-term Hair Removal

If you’ve had it with shaving, waxing, sugaring and other short-term hair removal options, and don’t mind spending the money, consider laser hair removal. One caveat: If you’re reading this during the summer, it’s too late to start your sessions to make a difference this year. Your best bet is scheduling your initial appointment after the New Year, and you’ll be on track for smooth, hairless skin next summer. Lasering requires more preparation than other hair removal options, since you must stay out of the sun for a few weeks beforehand and avoid waxing for a couple of months prior to laser hair removal, although shaving is fine. Expect to undergo six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, based on the hair growth cycle. Although laser hair removal is semi-permanent, you will likely need an annual touchup session.
