Mistakes to Avoid with Laser Hair Removal

Lasers remove hair permanently or semi-permanently, but it’s not a quick process. Patience is a virtue – once your treatment sessions are complete, no more shaving or waxing. Just make sure to follow the directions your dermatologist or laser hair removal technician gives you prior to treatments.

The Process

The doctor focuses the laser beam on the area with unwanted hair. This high focus light goes into your hair follicles, and the pigment in the follicles absorbs the light. The light absorption is what gets rid of the hair. Immediately after receiving this heated light beam, a cooling device is used to soothe and protect your skin. This ensures that just the hair and follicle are taken out. Laser hair removal has minimal side effects.

Laser Treatment Sessions

You won’t get rid of unwanted hair with one laser treatment. Expect to undergo four to seven sessions, with a treatment scheduled every month or so. The thicker the hair, the more sessions are necessary. Lasers remove hair during the growth phase, and the hair contains enough pigment for the laser. An individual session gets rid of growing hairs, but still-dormant hairs don’t reach growth stage for several weeks. That means you must come back and have them removed. It’s crucial to make and keep these appointments, even if your hair doesn’t grow in much after two or three treatments. It will grow in again, and you’ll have to start from square one several months later.

One Month Prior to Treatment

Preparation for laser hair removal consists of avoiding certain actions for at least a month before your initial appointment. Do not do any of the following to the hair you intend to remove:

  • pluck
  • wax
  • bleach

It’s perfectly fine to shave, and you should shave a day or two before treatment. The laser doesn’t work as well on longer leg, underarm or wherever hair.

Two Weeks Prior to Treatment

Stay out of the sun and away from tanning beds for two weeks before your first treatment. Follow this regimen during the course of your treatments.

After Treatment Care

Some redness or minor swelling might occur after treatment, but ice is your friend. Besides staying out of the sun, make sure to use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 rating on any exposed part of your body treated with the laser between your sessions.
