Getting Laser Hair Removal When You Have Darker Skin

Laser hair removal has its perks, but those perks weren't always available to everyone. Traditionally, the technology at the heart of hair removal lasers worked off of contrast, identifying the dark pigment of the hair against the lighter skin and destroying the follicle. For people with fair skin and dark hair, this method worked wonderfully. Everyone else, however, just had to find another way to get rid of unwanted hair.

Luckily, those days are gone. Thanks to advances in technology, laser hair removal can now be enjoyed by most everyone. So if your skin is on the darker side and you'd like to give laser hair removal a try, here is what you need to know.

Laser Types

As you start to venture out into the world of laser hair removal, you'll find that there are different laser types. In general, experts recommend that people with darker skin tones use what is called an Nd:YAG laser. Often just shortened to YAG, this laser bypasses the skin color when targeting hairs, meaning virtually anyone can make use of it. Additionally, these lasers penetrate deep into the skin, zapping hairs more effectively than virtually all other laser types.

Treating Your Skin

In addition to finding the spa or doctor that uses the right kind of laser, you'll also need to know how to take care of your skin both before and after the procedure. One of the best ways you can help your skin is to go easy on it for about five or six days leading up to the procedure. Avoid using any skincare products that have retinoids ore acids. Also, try to keep from getting sunburnt, as this can make the irritating effects of the laser even worse. After the procedure, use hydrocortisone to combat inflamed skin, as well as a fragrance-free lotion to help calm the skin and give it moisture.

How Much Should You Spend?

Unfortunately, you don't get the full effects of laser hair removal after one treatment. On average, people need at least six, and that can get fairly pricey at around $300 apiece. If you're on a budget, see if the spa offers a package deal, allowing you to knock a little bit off the overall price. The good news as far as cost goes, however, is that most providers don't charge more for the YAG laser.

When it comes to getting rid of unwanted hair, laser hair removal is one of the most effective methods. If you've been hesitant to try it in the past because you have darker skin, now you can go forth without fear and reap the hair-free benefits.
