Unwanted hair removal isn’t just for women. More men are opting for the less hairy look, especially in places where few people find body hair attractive, such as the back. Men have some of the same hair removal choices as women, but their needs are different. Here’s some of the pros and cons of different types of body hair removal as they relate to the male of the species:
If you want to get rid of unwanted hair once and for all, electrolysis is the way to go. It works well on large or small areas. The use of heat destroys each follicle. The downside: It hurts – a little – and it’s not cheap. Expect about 10 hair removal sessions until the hair is all gone, but once they’re over, hair is never growing back again.
Also known as hair removal cream, depilatories are an easy, inexpensive way to get rid of hair temporarily. Put the cream on the desired area, wait several minutes, then rinse off the cream and the hair. There’s no pain, and using a depilatory keeps hair away longer than shaving. You can purchase depilatories at the local drugstore or supermarket.
Laser hair removal doesn’t hurt as much as electrolysis, but it isn’t truly permanent. Still, once you go through the various sessions spaced four to six weeks apart – based on the hair growth cycle – you’ll only need an annual touchup to get rid of stray hairs. The laser targets the pigment in the hair, so men with lighter colored hair may not have such effective results.
Having hair removed via waxing keeps skin hairless for about three weeks. It does hurt, and there are plenty of better, pain-free ways to remove hair temporarily. There is one good argument for waxing. Since it’s relatively inexpensive, if you’re thinking about permanent hair removal but not sure you want to take that plunge, having the areas waxed lets you see how they will look should you decide to take the laser or electrolysis route in the future. Waxing mimics the appearance of permanent hair removal better than any other temporary method.
Here’s one hair removal method guys already know. It’s a cheap and easy way to remove hair. Before shaving leg or underarm hair, trim the long hairs with a scissors to make the shaving easier.
