There’s nothing wrong with shaving to rid yourself of unwanted hair, but it’s far from the most efficient method. When you rely on a razor, you’ll find yourself shaving twice a week to keep unwanted stubble at bay, especially during the summer when more of you is exposed. If you want to toss the razor for hot weather hair removal, here are the best alternatives for staying hair free longer.

Waxing

Yes, waxing can hurt somewhat. However, if you go through a waxing session just prior to your vacation, you won’t have to worry about errant hairs for the entire two to three weeks in which you are away. Leave that safety razor at home! There’s another benefit to waxing if you make it a regular routine. Over time, the skin on your legs or wherever the wax is applied becomes softer and smoother. Waxing works as an exfoliator, so those dead cells that dull skin don’t linger. After waxing, avoid heat for at least two days. That means no long, hot showers, tight clothes or sunbathing.

Sugaring

The ancient practice of sugaring lasts even longer than waxing – up to six weeks. The paste, consisting of sugar and lemon juice, forms a mold where it is applied and then is pulled by the technician. It’s a wee bit painful, but certainly tolerable, especially when you consider you don’t need to have it done again for another six weeks.

Laser Hair Removal

If you want to rid yourself of unwanted hair semi-permanently and are willing to spend the money and put in the time, laser hair removal is the way to go. If you’re reading this is mid-summer, it’s too late for laser hair removal this season to make a difference, but you can get a jump start on next year. Waiting until cold weather makes more sense, however, since you have to stay out of the sun prior to beginning laser hair removal sessions. Expect between six and 12 sessions for complete hair removal, spaced about 6 weeks apart to match the hair’s growth cycle. Once you’ve completed your sessions, you may need an annual touchup to remove stray hairs.

Laser hair removal works best on light-skinned individuals with dark hair. If you have darker skin, make sure the spa or technician you use has the right type of laser, since the wrong laser could cause hyperpigmentation. If your hair is grey, blond or red, you’re probably out of luck. Post-treatment, stay out of the sun and avoid heat on the treated area for several days.
