There is a difference between all natural and simply not shaving.
Though common in Europe, when American celebrities ban the blade, it just seems off. Of all people shouldn’t the rich and famous be smooth and sleek? Apparently not, according to Refinery29.
“Unfortunately, many people have strong opinions when women don't shave. And, those opinions become magnified the second a famous face decides to embrace hers and not try to hide it,” reports the beauty magazine. “We've noticed a trend of this happening more in recent years: people collectively freaking out about lady body hair for no good reason.”
Before knocking down stars for not shaving, Refinery29 prefaces a photo collage of unshaven celebrities, saying “smooth armpits only came into vogue around the 20’s.” Starting with Julia Roberts, who actually began going all natural under the arms in 1999, Refinery29 follows with a picture of Madonna. “In an Instagram snap in March 2014, people weren't sure whether her fuzz was real. Regardless of its authenticity, the reactions were decidedly split,” reports the magazine.
HELLO! also brought up Madonna’s choice to go all natural and brings up A-lister Cameron Diaz’s discussion on the subject in her beauty volume The Body Book, explaining though not her personal preference, “pubic hair has a purpose.”
"You can do what you want with it, I don’t care. You can shave it off every day, wax it off every day, turn it into a bonsai — I don’t care,” said Diaz. “I just said consider maybe not removing it permanently and forever with laser treatment. Forever is forever and when we make those choices for our body, we have to live with them forever."
Diaz’s point of changing attitudes is proven by actress Mo’Nique, who once claimed she would never shave due to discomfort, but was later seen with silky skin on the red carpet. “Which just goes to show there really is no such thing as a ‘right’ approach to body hair,” reports Refinery29. “Sometimes, opinions will change based on a whole array of non-of-your-beeswax reasons — but at the end of the day, it's a personal choice.”
Aside from personal preference, proving a point by not shaving is not uncommon. Model Daria Werbowy made her point public in a makeup free, black-and-white photo of her raising her arm up to show off her underarm hair. “It started a discussion as to where body hair falls within the typical scope of ‘beauty.’ Since Daria is a model, she, by definition, is representative of the beauty standard,” reported Refinery29. “But, some don't consider body hair to fit that standard, which is why her Instagram snap was so important.”
Taking to Twitter, Miley Cyrus embraced the chance to show off her underarm hair, even dying it red to emphasize it. “She's one of the first mainstream celebrities to embrace this trend, and people had a lot to say about it,” reported Refinery29. “While plenty of women applauded Miley for the move, a lot of her fans were confused — which led to some unfortunate comments.”
Like it or not, some celebrities for whatever reason are going all natural and their decisions seem to be making the non-issue quite hairy.
