There are more choices than ever for ridding yourself of unwanted body hair. There’s no right or wrong choices, although some types of hair removal are relatively expensive and may factor in your decision. Here are some pros and cons of several hair removal systems to aid in your selection process.
Everyone’s familiar with the old-fashioned razor, either disposable or electric. With the former, there’s the risk of cutting yourself if you aren’t careful. These old standbys get the job done, but you’ll have to shave more often than with other methods.
Laser hair removal gets rid of hair for the long-term, and often permanently. It’s a medical procedure done by a dermatologist or trained nurse, and relatively costly. The laser beam targets the hair’s roots, and since hair grows at different lengths, you’ll need several treatments over a period of months to remove all the hair. You must also prepare ahead of time for laser hair removal, and that means no tanning for at least six weeks prior to treatment and no waxing or plucking for the same time period.
It’s summer, and you want to wear a bikini. The Brazilian wax rids you of hair in the pubic area. The practitioner places warm wax on the area, removing it and hair with ripping it off with paper pads. It can hurt, and the discomfort may last for a few days. It’s also a fairly expensive service, but gets the job done.
If you don’t want to go to a salon, try waxing in the privacy of your home. These kits are cheap, and you can choose wax strips or heated wax. Ripping off the hair still hurts, but you’re controlling it.
Epilators are the electronic version of tweezers. The device plucks unwanted hair out by the roots. They come in battery-operated and electric versions, and aren’t expensive. Using an epilator does sting somewhat, but it’s an effective and efficient way to remove hair.
These creams dissolve the unwanted hair. The process doesn’t hurt, but the hairs grow back fairly soon. Depilatory creams are too strong for use on facial hair. On the plus side, the creams are inexpensive. Tip: While you might use depilatory cream in the shower, never leave it there. You don’t want to accidentally mistake it for shampoo or conditioner.
